Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Professionally since 1983, although my body work experience goes back over fifty years. I was originally trained as a Rolfer, after years of hands-on work, having grown up in a family that used the laying-on-of hands as a non-religious source of healing.
What is your primary product or service?
While I relieve pain in people via hands-on manual therapies, my primary motivation is to enable each individual's innate capacity for self-healing. We each have within us the ability for deep self-healing, waiting to be discovered. I convene the experiences needed in order to find each person's inner potentials for this self-healing.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I grew up able to "see with my hands" the pain other people experienced in their bodies. When my hands encountered such pain, I could feel it in my own body. I thought everyone had this ability until I was older and learned that was not the case. I inherited this capacity from my great grandmother and grandfather (maternally). The chiropractic profession allowed me to exercise these gifts within a scientific framework, a good choice of careers for me. In the past decade, this has expanded to yoga therapy as well.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Nearly all human body pain is the result of the body's faulty relationship to gravity. Our injuries and insults suffered over time bend us away from pain into more comfortable positions. They take us away from our natural inheritance of resting on our bones in gravity. Over time our injuries cause us to rely on muscle tension for our posture rather than bones. This leads to chronic pain, disability, disease and early death. I can relieve much of this accumulated body pain, but the real lesson is learning how to live properly with gravity from the inside-out. It is this ability to introduce patients to their own deep self-healing abilities, on their own, that is the long-term solution to human body pain, that differentiates my practice from most others.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
I am currently nearing full retirement, working only eight clinic contact hours per week at present. I also teach classes for health care professionals on self-healing techniques, as well as consult with national and international consortiums dealing with human pain, disability, yoga, meditation and self-healing. I'm evolving toward a more ethereal contribution to human well-being, while maintaining a small service of hands-on healing.
What type of payments do you accept?
I do not accept credit, but am covered my most third-party insurance payers, cash and checks.
Which areas do you service?
My clinic is in NW Portland, but I provide service to all parts of the Earth via the internet.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
I am the sole owner of DocBones, PC. My wife and I run our small clinic.
What are your hours of operation?
Patient contact hours are Tuesdays, 2:00 - 5:00, and Thursdays, 10:00 - noon and 2:00 - 5:00. I work from my computer consulting with distant patients about their rehabilitation practices all hours of all days via email. I have more distant patients now than in office. Distant patients work with rehab plans I establish, at home on their own, consulting when they choose about their progress.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
Being called a "true healer" by others is comforting, but in turth, I am just the convener. As the sign in the old chiropractor's office says, "God does the healing, I just collect the fee." The best compliment is, "You showed me the healing that was waiting to be discovered inside me."
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
In this context, an Aramaic quote by a young Jesus of Nazareth, which reveals that, "Those who loosen the inner rigidities, gain the universal healing power of Nature." I am also intrigued by this from Jose Arquelles, the principle revealer of the Mayan prophesy, "Now time is money; then time will be Art." May it be so.
